The Coalition of African American Nurses (CAAN) was founded and incorporated in 2002 in effort to decrease the health care disparity by establishing a self care program for their inner city practical nursing students. CAAN expanded their mission in 2004 after realizing that nurses are critical in keeping people healthy and safe to encompass the professional education of young people in the South Suburbs of Chicago. CAAN thereby developed the Academy of Nursing as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) that partners with South Suburban area high schools. CAAN delivers an Illinois Department of Finance and Professional Regulations (IDFPR) approved Practical Nursing curricula designed for the Adult learner preparing graduating students to take qualifying exams to be licensed as practical nurses (NCLEX-PN). The Academy addresses two needs: (1) the national and regional acute shortage of nurses and (2) the need to inspire traditionally underserved students by presenting them with career opportunities that can be realized straight out of high school.

We are committed to creating competent, caring, compassionate nursing professionals driven to provide quality care with commitment to educational progression along the nursing career pathway.
